They looked perfectly aligned.
No disagreement. No challenge. Just silence – and a follow-up call later.
So if your leadership team always “gets it” immediately…
You might be in trouble.
(It feels aligned – but that’s the problem.)
When no one disagrees, you’re not making decisions – you’re reinforcing defaults.
Fast alignment is easy.
- It skips debate.
- It avoids tension.
- It feels good in the moment.
But it’s fragile under pressure.
Earned alignment is different:
- It’s slower.
- Sometimes uncomfortable.
- Built on trust strong enough to hold disagreement, without it becoming personal.
- It invites friction before agreement.
- It sounds like challenge, and ends in clarity.
That trust comes from psychological safety.
(Not the fluffy kind. The real kind.)
Where challenge is welcome and candour isn’t punished.
You can feel the difference.
In unsafe rooms:
- People either hold back or over-talk to protect their position
- The same few voices dominate
- Dissent is met with silence – or a follow-up call later
- Questions are filtered for safety, not curiosity
- Agreement is performative – decisions happen elsewhere
In safe rooms:
- People interrupt – to clarify, not to compete
- Leaders say, “I might be wrong, what am I missing?”
- Disagreement signals commitment, not conflict
- Decisions are pressure-tested in the open, not rubber-stamped behind closed doors
- The quietest voices are invited in, not overlooked
You don’t need more frameworks.
You need rooms where people can be smart and honest at the same time.
